Reducing the Hazards of High Heat PDF Print E-mail

A new fabric technology is put to the test and comes up a winner.
by Scott Bumbarger

How do you stay cool when temperatures on the job soar? This is one of the most critical workplace safety and health issues affecting managers and employees today. Whether it's the airport personnel working on hot tarmac in the blazing summer sun or the foundry worker who battles scalding waves of heat year-round, the question is vital to hundreds of thousands of American workers.

A study released recently by David Pascoe, Ph.D., Doctor of Human Bioenergetics in the Department of Health and Human Performance at Auburn University, was presented at the Southeast Regional meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine. This study concludes a revolutionary new fabric technology may provide the wearer the ability to respond physiologically to the environmental stress in a more favorable manner, thereby reducing the hazards of high-heat environments, extending work time, and increasing worker comfort

How CoolTek Works PDF Print E-mail

In today’s market, there are several different types of cooling technologies that are available for portable body cooling. The most sophisticated of these are essentially portable, tethered air conditioners that have been developed for military explosive ordinance disposal. As you would expect these systems are not only heavy, but are also extremely expensive. Furthermore, as with any system, there is the tradeoff between cooling effect and burden on the individual by adding weight. Other systems relying on fluid flow include recirculating vests. These too suffer from severe weight penalties and are generally not user friendly.

Testimonials

Professional Racecar Driver uses CoolTek on the track.

I just wanted to write to let you know how wonderful the nylon pullover vest and ball cap have worked under the intense heat of road racing. In this past year I have experienced fatigue and nausea due to the extreme heat of both driving in these hot summer months and sitting in the pit area during grid or yellow flag, in full Nomex under layers and driving suit. While I have tried any number of remedies to keep cool while in the car or to cool off before and after driving, the results were only temporary and some were rather shocking to the system! Ice water poured over your head, wet Nomex and wet hair, ice packets in the driving suit, ice packets on the neck and wrists - none of the measures I tried were effective and most were very uncomfortable! The CoolTek vest is a treasure...It is not shocking to my body and, more important, it keeps my body temperature constant. THAT is what has kept me cool and fit to drive weekend after weekend on even the hottest July and August day. I put the ball cap on when I am not driving to keep my body temperature down and then use the vest under my driving suit to keep me cool and collected when in the car. The CoolTek vest and ball cap are a must for anyone who is working outside or participating in active sports. My CoolTek vest is invaluable to me - it is now as critical to me as my Nomex under layer, shoes and gloves. For anyone who is concerned about keeping their body temperature at a constant despite strenuous or stressful activity, the CoolTek vest should be a requirement! Your willingness to develop and improve a quality product is appreciated more than you know. I hope to be able to send many race fans (drivers and spectators) to CoolTek for better health! I will look to you for more wonderful products in the future.
